{"id":109,"date":"2016-03-24T22:28:47","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T22:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/regionals.highedweb.org\/west16\/\/?post_type=schedule&#038;p=109"},"modified":"2016-06-13T12:42:50","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T19:42:50","slug":"switching-to-scrum","status":"publish","type":"schedule","link":"https:\/\/regionals.highedweb.org\/west16\/schedule\/switching-to-scrum\/","title":{"rendered":"Switching to SCRUM:  Does it Work in Higher Ed?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"conf-sch-single-meta\"><\/div><p>Do the words &#8220;agile&#8221; and &#8220;nimble&#8221; get used a lot on your campus?\u00a0 Do you find that those words typically translate into &#8220;do more of the same things you&#8217;re already doing, but faster?&#8221;\u00a0 Everyone wants things done faster and cheaper, but the methods for doing so sustainably require changing some deeply ingrained assumptions and habits.\u00a0 In order for changes to be lasting, they need to occur at an organizational level.<\/p>\n<p>One way to make lasting change is to adopt a well-established agile process like SCRUM.\u00a0 SCRUM has been broadly adopted outside of higher education and can count many successes, from countless Internet start-ups to the enormous HealthCare.gov.\u00a0 But does SCRUM work in higher ed?<\/p>\n<p>SCRUM seems straightforward, but any experienced project manager will tell you that there&#8217;s a big gap between theory and practice. Paul Schantz&#8217;s web development team and CSUN stakeholders have been using SCRUM for about a year.\u00a0 In that time, they went from figuring out how to sell SCRUM to leadership, funding formal training, and using\u00a0it for real projects.\u00a0 The process hasn&#8217;t been easy, and there are definitely some &#8220;gotchas&#8221; to be aware of.\u00a0 Attend this session to learn what works and what doesn&#8217;t work&#8230;.
